Unite activists sign letter to Graham after ban on union banners at Palestine demos

Alleged management ban on exec members marching under Unite banners leads to angry letter denouncing lack of action and solidarity with slaughtered Gazans

Unite banners at a Manchester Gaza demo – but executive members say they have been banned from formal representation

Unite members and activists have issued an outraged letter to union general secretary Sharon Graham, after members of the elected executive were told not to attend, under a Unite banner, demonstrations against Israel’s genocide in Gaza.

The letter reads:

Dear Sharon Graham,

As a result of our letters of 30 October and 1 November and other representations, including from London and Eastern Region, you finally agreed, after nearly 4 weeks of an ongoing genocide by Israel, to issue a statement on November 3 calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.

The statement was however pitiably weak. There was no mention of genocide or ethnic cleansing. There was no mention of the war crimes perpetrated by Israel – the bombing of hospitals, the targeting and murder of journalists, academics and doctors to say nothing of the bombing of residential areas or the murder of children, which now stands at over 8,000.

There was no mention of the fact that Israel has imposed a food, water and fuel blockade on the Gaza strip resulting in starvation according to the United Nations. Collective punishment of a civilian population is a egregious breach of international law yet the statement treats the Palestinians and the Israeli state as equally responsible.

It is not Hamas which possesses an air force but Israel. It is the Israeli state which is carrying out the carpet bombing of Gaza with the intent of forcing Palestinians out altogether.

The statement treats the genocidal attack on the people of Gaza as equivalent to the break-out from the world’s largest open air prison on October 7. Israel has occupied the Gaza Strip for 56 years imposing a suffocating siege on it since 2007.

This report from Vatican News of 16 December gives just one example of Israel’s war crimes:

‘Israelis have opened fire on Gaza’s Christians. Following heavy bombardment overnight of the area around Holy Family Latin parish in Gaza City, dozens are reported dead… and reports continue to arrive that shooting by Israeli snipers continues during these hours. A statement released by the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem confirmed that an Israeli sniper murdered two Christian women inside the Holy Family Parish where the majority of Christian families have taken refuge since the start of the war.’

An even more horrifying massacre took place on 17 December. Al Jazeera reported that Israeli bulldozers have crushed Palestinians who were taking shelter in tents outside Kamal Adwan Hospital.

Dozens of Palestinians are reported to have been buried alive. These are Nazi-style massacres and yet you have said nothing and done nothing since issuing your statement. You were happy to wave the Ukrainian flag but you haven’t waved the Palestinian flag or expressed any sympathy with the thousands of murdered Palestinian civilians, not least children.

UN Secretary General António Guterres accepted that there was a context to October 7. Many Israeli civilians died at the hands of the Israeli military. See Israeli forces shot their own civilians, kibbutz survivor says.

Unite at its 2023 Policy Conference passed motions supporting Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions and affirmed that Israel is practising the crime of apartheid. That should have informed Unite’s statement.

The statement treats one of the world’s most powerful militaries and the resistance of the Palestinians as equal. Your claim that Israel’s goal is to eliminate Hamas is untrue. Why bomb homes, schools and ambulances if this was the case? Were the dead children also Hamas ‘terrorists’?

The statement says nothing about what Unite intends to do. You have done nothing to publicise all the previous national demonstrations. Are you going to ignore the one on January 13 too? There has been no national Unite presence on the marches to date.

We demand that you publicise all future demonstration, that you provide the resources necessary for Unite members to attend, that Unite nationally is present on the march together with its banner and that Unite has a speaker at the rally.

A leaked Israeli intelligence document makes it clear that Israel’s intention is to repeat the Nakba in 1948 when ¾ million Palestinians were expelled.

If Israel succeeds this will be a prelude to ethnic cleansing on the West Bank where there has been a reign of terror in the past 6 months. Over 250 people have died since October 7. Vast areas of Area C have been ‘cleansed’ as Israeli settlers and the army attack farmers.None of this is recognised in your statement. Netanyahu has compared the Palestinians to ‘Amalek’ whom God instructed the Israelites to exterminate yet Unite’s statement ignores this. Open calls in Israel for the extermination of the Palestinians are being made and Israel’s army is doing just that.

By blocking fuel, babies on incubators and people on dialysis machines have already died.

It is time for Unite to show that the situation in Gaza is an urgent one and to mobilise its members. We give the Labour Party over £1m a year. We should be demanding that Keir Starmer makes way for someone who is not a ‘Zionist without qualification’. At the moment he is nothing more than Sunak’s echo chamber.

Yours sincerely

Sharon Graham had already infuriated supporters of Palestinian rights by remaining silent for many weeks at the start of Israel’s latest genocidal assault on Gaza – then making a grossly asymmetrical statement appearing to treat Israeli deaths more seriously than Palestinian and allegedly having the exec railroaded into accepting only her preferred wording when the statement was eventually issued.

Graham was also exposed using proxies to order the cancellation of showings of the film ‘Oh Jeremy Corbyn/The Big Lie’, which exposes the political abuse of antisemitism accusations against left-wingers in the Labour party, and discussion of Asa Winstanley’s forensic book Weaponising Antisemitism: How the Israel Lobby Brought Down Jeremy Corbyn. Proxies were similarly despatched to try, unsuccessfully, to cancel a Unite ‘fringe’ event at Labour’s conference earlier this month in support of Palestinians.

At the time of writing, the letter is still open for Unite members to add their signature via Google Docs. It will be submitted shortly after new year.

Police charge Palestine Solidarity activist for backing legal right to resist occupation

Mick Napier charged with ‘support for proscribed organization’ under Terrorism Act as Establishment attempt to suppress solidarity with Palestine continues

Palestine Solidarity Activist Mick Napier, a founder of the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign, has been charged under anti-terror legislation after giving a speech in Glasgow in which he said:

I agree with the Palestinian right to resist by means that they choose.

Napier has been charged under the Terrorism Act with supporting a ‘proscribed organisation’. He also thanked Hamas for ‘breaking out of the Gaza concentration camp’. He was arrested at the demo, shortly afterward. According to Electronic Intifada, police officers told Napier that he was being arrested for ‘religiously aggravated’ offences.

Hamas was made a proscribed organisation by the UK government on the basis of its rocket attacks on Israel – but is not listed as a terror group by the United Nations and the UN defeated an attempted 2020 US resolution condemning the group for its rocket attacks. It is widely recognised that the right to resist occupation is protected under international law as part of the human right of self-determination, including the use of force consistent with the UN charter. It appears the UK Establishment is applying the Terrorism Act in a way inconsistent with international law.

Napier is not the only human rights advocate targeted by police. As Skwawkbox exclusively reported, Brighton-based Tony Greenstein was arrested earlier this week and suffered the confiscation of his electronics, for a single tweet, after what is believed to have been a complaint from a right-wing pro-Israel group. He was released without charge on police bail, but under a series of draconian bail conditions that attack his freedom of speech as well as his privacy.

Mick Napier was released on bail under similarly draconian conditions banning him from attending any protest in Scotland and from entering the centre of Glasgow. He pleaded not guilty to all five charges and is due to appear in court 9 January. PSC Scotland – a separate organisation from the English PSC – has said it will give him full support.

Video: Jerusalem deputy mayor exposed claiming ‘no churches or Christians in Gaza’

Fleur Hassan-Nahoum’s denial of reality shown up live on air

No churches and no Christians?

Jerusalem’s deputy mayor Fleur Hassan-Nahoum – supposedly a ‘media expert’ – was shown up live on air on LBC when she tried to claim there are no Christians and no churches in Gaza. Israel is currently besieging one of the churches and murdering the Christians inside by sniper fire, prompting the Pope to say today that Israel is committing terrorism – and even her right-wing interviewer was unwilling to let that pass.

Caught out, Nahoum could only claim she hadn’t seen the report – but that hadn’t stopped her making the emphatic and emphatically false claim in the first place.

Gaza in fact has more than a thousand Christians – and the two thousand or so who left in the past fifteen years did so to escape the occupation and for economic reasons, not because they were driven out by Palestinian Muslims, with whom they have peacefully co-existed for millennia.

Israel’s shoddy propaganda attempts fall apart again.

As Gaza burns, Labour organises ‘Keir-aoke’ to raise party funds

Starmer’s party isn’t satisfied with making us cringe through billionaire donations, support for war crimes and contempt for Palestinian suffering

With more than 20,000 slaughtered in Gaza by Israel – around half of them children – and many more maimed, Keir Starmer is rightly facing jeers and heckling everywhere he goes, because of his support for Israel’s ‘right’ to ‘defend itself’ by the mass murder of civilians and the razing of schools, hospitals and homes.

Labour’s response? A fundraiser titled ‘Keir-aoke’ – not to raise funds for oppressed Palestinians facing an illegal occupation and an apartheid system that treats them as lower than animals, but for whatever purposes the party thinks fit:

Despite donations from billionaires and corporations, Labour is still telling its members that it depends on their donations to survive – but clearly the regime’s numerous begging letters aren’t getting a good response and the party machine is somehow deluded enough to think mutilating language to name an event after Starmer is going to be more, not less appealing.

The lowest price for a ticket to this cringe-fest is £16.96 (but only for ‘concessions’), though people can save money by not going and instead buying – seriously – a ‘solidarity’ ticket for a mere £15:

Labour has already had to cancel one event because of protests by human rights supporters outraged by Starmer’s and local MP Steve Reed’s enthusiastic support for genocide, but the party is clearly not inclined to think, let alone learn, and its delusion runs deep.

Meanwhile, people with actual human feeling will be marching in their hundreds of thousands, in London and around the country, for justice, a ceasefire and an end to the illegal occupation of Palestine:

Check here for the actions near you – but be aware that at the time of writing, the PSC event page appears to be under an attack that is suspiciously affecting only that page on the PSC’s website.

The Women of the Far Right: Social Media Influencers and Online Radicalization – review

Published by Anonymous (not verified) on Tue, 12/12/2023 - 9:57pm in

In The Women of the Far Right: Social Media Influencers and Online Radicalization, Eviane Leidig examines the phenomenon of far-right women influencers who seek new recruits for white nationalism through carefully constructed online presences. Drawing on three years of digital ethnographic research, Leidig paints a captivating and concerning picture of how these influencers create networked intimacy through social media platforms, writes Nadia Karizat.

book cover of the women of the far right showing a smiling woman on a phone screen with some emojis around her.“…Far-right women are marketing themselves in their most authentic and accessible form while promoting a hateful ideology…A central component of this success lies in the visibility afforded to these far-right women influencers on social media platforms…” (15).

The networked nature of social media platforms has been used by many social movements over the years, such as those that aim to spread content and raise awareness for social justice through hashtags, retweets and links to direct action (eg, Pro-Palestinian, Anti-Zionist Jewish and Black Lives Matter activists). Through the sharing of videos, text and images on social media, efforts are made to bring ideological shifts in the ways society thinks about issues such as police brutality, settler-colonialism, etc. On the flip side, social media platforms are also used by nefarious actors who aim to recruit members and disseminate information for the goals of white supremacy and preservation of so-called Western exceptionalism. In The Woman of the Far Right: Social Media Influencers and Online Radicalization, Eviane Leidig describes the behaviours and practices of far-right women influencers on social media platforms (eg, Instagram, YouTube), observed over three years of digital ethnographic research where Leidig fully immersed herself into the online worlds of these women and their followers.

Eviane Leidig describes the behaviours and practices of far-right women influencers on social media platforms (eg, Instagram, YouTube), observed over three years of digital ethnographic research

Early on, Leidig distinguishes the terms alt-right and far right (although the application is inconsistent throughout the book); she states she uses the term alt-right to refer to a specific political scene in terms of time and place within the broader far-right movement (ie, North America between 2016 and 2019), or in reference to an individual infamous for their leadership within the alt-right (eg, Richard Spencer). Alternatively, the term far right is used to signal “ideological beliefs and practices that remain constant” within this broader movement and context.

The Far-Right movement is characterised by a preoccupation with nativism, extreme nationalism, and authoritarianism with a growing trend of organising around antifeminism and anti-Islam in the hopes of protecting the “good” (white) family

The Far-Right movement is characterised by a preoccupation with nativism, extreme nationalism, and authoritarianism with a growing trend of organising around antifeminism and anti-Islam in the hopes of protecting the “good” (white) family in a “good” heterosexual marriage with children that practice “good” traditional (white) western values. What makes the alt-right unique to other movements within the far right, according to Leidig, is how integral technology has been to its development. This motivated her investigation into alt-right American and Canadian social media influencers to understand how they use social media and its affordances for the promotion of and recruitment into a hateful ideology.

Leidig positions far-right women influencers as the “exception” within a more male-dominated movement.

But, why the focus on women? Leidig positions far-right women influencers as the “exception” within a more male-dominated movement. Yet, she is careful to situate their existence as part of a sustained history where women have been both subjugated within the far-right world view – where whiteness and maleness hold power – while also contributing to the dissemination of its ideology and propaganda. For example, she discusses Lauren Chen, a biracial woman, as a far-right influencer of colour who “supports structures such as white supremacy if it promotes their self-interest.” And so, we see through examples such as these how those with identities that would hold positions with little power in a far-right utopia take advantage of the visibility and microcelebrity-based power accessible within the movement through strategic use of social media.

Instagram stories – posts that do not appear on one’s main Instagram feed and disappear after 24 hours – allow for an influencer’s audience to send direct messages, participate in polls, respond to Q&As or send reactions (eg, a heart icon) and creates a sense of closeness between audience and influencer.

In Chapters Two through Five, Leidig discusses these practices by far-right women influencers through the lens of “networked intimacy”, referring to techniques (eg, social media behaviours, self-presentation strategies) that help to establish a sense of connection between an influencer and their audience with an aura of authenticity and relatability. An example of this Leidig describes is how ephemeral Instagram stories – posts that do not appear on one’s main Instagram feed and disappear after 24 hours – allow for an influencer’s audience to send direct messages, participate in polls, respond to Q&As or send reactions (eg, a heart icon) and creates a sense of closeness between audience and influencer. Leidig argues that this is a strategy of networked intimacy where the possibilities for “direct interaction…offers unfiltered radicalization and recruitment possibilities between far-right women influencers and their followers.” Similarly, far-right women influencers may share curated ‘vulnerable’ content related to seemingly non-political experiences, such as dating experiences or financial advice, that are embedded with subtle far-right messaging but ultimately work to draw-in an unsuspecting audience who then witness the influencers’ political content posted alongside the “not (blatantly) political.” In this way, through strategies of networked intimacy and taking advantage of the visibility and potential for reaching new audiences on mainstream social media, far-right women influencers rely on mainstream social media platforms to retain notoriety and normalise far-right ideologies.

Leidig envisions coordinated responses from governments, civil society and tech business – both online and offline – that may help to counter the far-right movement and prevent the dissemination and uptake of its ideology.

Towards the end of the book, in Chapter Seven, Leidig envisions coordinated responses from governments, civil society and tech business – both online and offline – that may help to counter the far-right movement and prevent the dissemination and uptake of its ideology. For example, in her discussion on efforts from tech companies to counter the far-right, Leidig discusses content moderation approaches with what she refers to as the “Four D’s of content moderation”: deplatforming, demonetization, deranking, and detection.” Leidig argues that deplatforming, which is when a social media platform shuts down an account associated with a certain user, is “an effective strategy that places priorities of victims over that of perpetrators while significantly limiting the influencers’ reach.” Through deplatforming, far-right influencers lose their ability to network intimacy with a receptive audience on a given platform.

Leidig briefly discusses offline efforts, such as civil society and governments working to provide social support that addresses issues such as income inequality, that can help make people less susceptible to buying into the propaganda of these influencers. However, she does not delve into many specifics beyond calls for countering far-right narratives (eg, via counter-influencers online) and valuing the grievances of those who do feel left behind by society. Rather than be prescriptive with solutions, in this last chapter, Leidig imagines many different stakeholders and organisations coordinating responses to reduce the influence, and thus power, of the far-right. It is for us readers and those with positions in power to decide what we do next.

Leidig paints a captivating picture of how far-right women influencers spread and recruit individuals to their movement, with complex messaging around antifeminism, islamophobia, a white racial identity and “western” values.

All in all, in The Women of the Far Right, Leidig paints a captivating picture of how far-right women influencers spread and recruit individuals to their movement, with complex messaging around antifeminism, islamophobia, a white racial identity and “western” values. By keeping her analysis grounded within social media platforms, we understand how the goals of these influencers are made achievable thanks to the features and visibility afforded to them by technology. And as a result, we – the everyday tech user, scholars, designers – are forced to grapple with the many potentials of technology for spreading hate, as well as calls for justice.

Video: Corbyn challenges Cameron over refusal to deny UK troops are operating in Gaza

Published by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 07/12/2023 - 8:25pm in

Former Labour leader demands answers over dodging of Commons question

Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has written to Foreign Secretary David Camerona over the refusal of his underling to say that UK troops are not operating on the ground in Gaza in support of Israel’s genocide and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians. In his letter, Corbyn notes the hideous death toll of Palestinian civilians and Israel’s blatant war crimes in Gaza – and demands an answer from Cleverly to his question about the involvement of UK military personnel:

Any UK troops in Gaza are likely to be using Israel-made equipment to help Israel carry out its bombing: in 2021, the UK government awarded a £103m contract to Israeli weapons firm Elbit Systems to provide laser-marking systems.

Tory PM Rishi Sunak has already sent UK ships to the seas off Gaza to provide logistical support to Israeli bombers and troops, but the direct involvement of UK forces in the targeting and killing of civilians would be a major scandal. UK special forces have often operated to provide laser guidance for bombs and Israel’s mass bombing has killed well over 15,000 civilians, around half of them children.

Cameron is likely to copy his minion and dodge the question.

An earlier version of this article mentioned former Foreign Secretary James Cleverly.

‘Why We Must Stand Up Against Those Fanning the Flames of Hate’

The last few weeks have been challenging, to say the least, both politically and personally.

Politically, by voting for an immediate ceasefire, a matter of great importance to me and my constituents, I gave up my position as part of Labour's front bench.

Personally, I’ve had to make a number of complaints to the police due to the abuse and hatred I have received as a result of that vote.

The irony of receiving so much Islamophobic abuse during Islamophobia Awareness Month is not lost on me.

However, it is also no surprise given the unprecedented level of dog whistle politics that the former Home Secretary Suella Braverman brought to the forefront, a stark reminder of Enoch Powell’s 'Rivers of Blood' speech. The only difference being at least some thought of Enoch Powell as an intellectual heavyweight, albeit a bigoted one, while this was a pathetic and dangerous attempt from a woman in a position of huge power to deflect from her own incompetencies and further pursue her political ambitions by fanning the flames of hate.

Since taking public office in 2015, sadly, I have become accustomed to Islamophobia. However, the increase in divisions amongst people since 7 October is something we neglect at our peril.

This hate is real, it is growing, and it needs to stop.

It is growing because in this tornado of hate, good people have remained silent; there is an absence of leadership, which is creating a void; a void in which those who feed on hate have arisen to take the podium.

As a society, we must, each and every one of us, play our part to contribute to community cohesion, to help heal the wounds of division, and to strive for a society that eradicates the cancer of hatred.

Over the last few weeks, I’ve seen the offices of fellow parliamentarians vandalised, homes desecrated, worshippers intimidated, and communities feeling hurt and frightened, be it those leaving a Mosque or a Synagogue.

None of this is acceptable.

The antidote, which may seem clichéd, is love, peace and empathy. This requires us not only to call out hatred but also to have the courage to have brave conversations amongst ourselves, our colleagues, our friends, our families, our communities and across society. As well as having the courage to listen to those with whom we may not always agree.

This bravery and courage is also required when all of us deal with our own communities and with individuals who get it wrong.

Just as Muslims appreciate the few who call out the blatant Islamophobia we have seen from some politicians and newspapers, it is also incumbent upon us to call out the gross Antisemitism spewed during sermons within some Mosques, even when amongst those who are exposing such hatred are themselves bad-faith actors using such parallels to pit further division and hate.

When I receive texts from both Muslim friends and Jewish friends highlighting issues of both Antisemitism and Islamophobia, we have to lead despite the inevitable blowback from those whose narratives we challenge.

For those in positions of influence, it is only by putting our heads above the parapet that we can claim we are upstanders and not bystanders.

The need today is like never before. Today's leaders are competing not with intellect and experience but with social media influencers, the type that thrive on the division that gives them relevance, which they otherwise could not earn in traditional ways through learning, experience and the hard work of building bridges which provide hope and lead to peace.

Equally, we mustn't throw out the baby with the bathwater, and we must call upon those influencers who do use their platform in genuine ways to raise awareness about inequality and injustice wherever that may be happening; luckily for us, they are greater in number.

This is a responsibility that we cannot and must not shy away from.

In the age of misinformation and instantaneous news cycles, we must double down on verifying the sources from which we get our information and share to build peace, not hatred and division.

Communities are hurting, people, including me, feeling helpless and doing what little we can to try and play our part in building peace. People of faith and no faith, people in the Holy Land and people beyond, all feeling pained by what we are witnessing.

But here’s the thing in all of this, faced with the bigots who can afford to paint everyone with the same brush, reason and intellect tell us otherwise. Just as I will never accept anyone holding me or my fellow British Muslims responsible for the actions of Hamas, I will not accept anyone holding British Jews for the ongoing killings of Palestinians.

Our human values demand of us that we do better and better we must do.

Photos/video: pro-Gaza ceasefire march floods London’s streets again

Husan Zomlot, Apsana Begum, among speakers at huge gathering

Hundreds of thousands have again peacefully flooded the streets of London and other cities in support of the besieged people of Gaza and to demand a proper ceasefire in Israel’s genocide and ethnic cleansing in the tiny Palestinian territory. Speakers included Palestinian ambassador Husam Zomlot, Poplar and Limehouse MP Apsana Begum – a victim of the Islamophobia of the Labour right – Bell Ribeiro-Addy and others.

Israel, meanwhile, is said to have breached the terms of its ‘pause’ in fighting, delaying the latest release of Israeli captives, according to a Hamas spokesperson. There is nothing humanitarian about a pause. Ceasefire now.

Video: former US Israel adviser arrested after disgusting Islamophobic hate-speech tirades

Stuart Seldowitz’s foul and shameless verbal assaults on street food vendor finally have consequences. He now offers to apologise

Pro-Israel former US government adviser Stuart Seldowitz has been arrested after a shameless and disgusting series of tirades against a Muslim street food vendor.

Seldowitz was filmed – and knew he was being filmed – smiling as he asked the man whether he had raped his daughter, threatened to send details of his family to the Egyptian secret police so they could pull out his father’s fingernails and, appallingly, said that four thousand Palestinian children slaughtered in Gaza wasn’t ‘enough’.

And he went back repeatedly to do it, as videos of him in different outfits show:

Seldowitz was Deputy Director in the US State Department’s Office of Israel and Palestinian Affairs from 1999 to 2003. It’s not hard to imagine whose side he was on during his ‘service’ – and his lack of hesitation as he was filmed suggests he thought he was above consequences for his racism and actions.

However, while New York Police reportedly originally said they could take no action because he was exercising his freedom of speech, Seldowitz has now been arrested for aggravated racial harassment and four counts of stalking – and in an embarrassing climbdown that his actions suggest has everything to do with avoiding prosecution, has offered to apologise to the man he abused:

Seldowitz’s arrogance is all too typical of the attitude of supporters of Israeli violence and apartheid, who treat scrutiny as antisemitic and even as ‘holocaust denial’.

Israel has slaughtered more than 15,000 civilians, around half of them children, and has bombed schools, hospitals and the homes of doctors and journalists in its campaign to empty Gaza for its own purposes, committing widespread war crimes. Its pretext – that it is ‘defending itself’ after supposed atrocities by Hamas, is falling apart daily as its ‘evidence’ for Hamas’s presence in hospitals is rightly mocked and its admissions continue, unreported by the so-called ‘mainstream’ media in this country, that Israeli forces killed hundreds of their own people on 7 October.
