Jewish-American Biden appointee resigns over US support for Israel’s genocide

Biden ‘has blood on his hands’ and is making Jews less safe by enabling Israel’s slaughter of Palestinians, says Lily Greenberg Call as she quits the Department of Interior

Lily Greenberg Call

Jewish-American political appointee Lily Greenberg Call – previously a proponent of pro-Israel propaganda now clearly horrified by the reality of the settler-colonial project – has resigned from her position in government over the United States’ collusion in Israel’s genocide in Gaza, telling US president Joe Biden that he has blood on his hands and is endangering Jewish people by helping Israel’s slaughter of Palestinian civilians.

In a withering resignation letter to her boss Deb Haaland, she describes Israel’s mass murder of Palestinians as genocide and accuses the US government of furthering the subjugation of the Palestinian people for the sake of the apartheid occupation:

May 15. 2024
Secretary Deb Haaland
United States Department of the Interior
1849 C St NW
Washington, DC 20240

Dear Secretary Haaland,

I joined the Biden Administration because I believe in fighting for a better America, for a future where Americans can thrive: one with economic prosperity, a healthy planet, and equal rights for all people. I have dedicated my career to candidates who I believed would further this vision. I worked for Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign in 2019, and then moved to Arizona to work for President Biden’s campaign in 2020. I was thrilled to join the Department of Interior because I was inspired by your principled track record of championing progressive causes, in addition to your role as an Indigenous woman leading a Department that historically harmed Indigenous communities, and the potential that it has for reparations, reconciliation, and healing.

However, I can no longer in good conscience continue to represent this administration amidst President Biden’s disastrous, continued support for lsrael’s genocide in Gaza.

I am an American Jew. My family escaped antisemitic persecution in Europe and found refuge in America. They changed their names at Ellis Island and worked as farmers, peddlers. and salespeople. My grandparents could not go to college. Two generations later, I have the honor of working as an appointee for the President of the United States. The weight of this position is not lost on me. This is the story of many people in my community: a story of survival, upward
mobility and fulfillment of the American Dream. And yet I have asked myself many times over the last eight months: what is the point of having power if you will not use it to stop crimes against humanity?

My whole life has been spent in Jewish community in the US and Israel. I have spent time in Israel/Palestine, and I learned Hebrew and Arabic both formally in school and through connection in community. I have family and friends who are Israeli, Palestinian – and have loved ones who have served in the IDF. People in my community lost loved ones during Hamas’s attack on October 7th; beloveds killed, displaced, and taken as hostages. I am terrified by rising antisemitism around the world. And yet I am certain that the answer to this is not to collectively punish millions of innocent Palestinians through displacement, famine and ethnic cleansing.

Israel’s ongoing offensive against Palestinians does not keep Jewish people safe – in Israel nor in the United States. What I have learned from my Jewish tradition is that every life is precious. That we are obligated to stand up for those facing violence and oppression, and to question authority in the face of injustice.

As of writing this. Israel has killed 35,000 people in Gaza, including 15,000 children. The Israeli military has bombed medical infrastructure, besieged a hospital, left mass graves behind, destroyed every university in Gaza, targeted journalists and aid workers and committed many, many inexcusable atrocities. These are all violations of international law, none of which would be possible without American weapons, and none of which have been condemned by President Biden.

The President has the power to call for a lasting ceasefire, to stop sending weapons to Israel, and to condition aid. The United States has used nearly no leverage throughout the last eight months to hold Israel accountable; quite the opposite. we have enabled and legitimized Israel’s actions with vetoes of UN resolutions designed to hold Israel accountable. President Biden has the blood of innocent people on his hands.

The United States has long enabled Israeli war crimes and the status quo of apartheid and occupation. That status quo does not keep Israelis safe, nor Jews around the world. It certainly does not protect Palestinians. who have the right to freedom, safety, self-determination, and dignity, just as much as Jewish people do, and every person does. Any system that requires the subjugation of one group over another is not only unjust. but unsafe. Jewish safety cannot – and
will not – come at the expense of Palestinian freedom. Making Jews the face of the American war machine makes us less safe. What seems like a lack of awareness in the Administration leadership of how critical this issue is to the American public is devastating to both communities and politically disastrous.

Today, May I5th, is Nakba Day, which recognizes the destruction of Palestinian society and homeland in 1948 and the displacement of the majority of the Palestinian people for the formation of today’s modern Israel. Nakba and Shoah, the Hebrew word for Holocaust, mean the same thing: catastrophe. I reject the premise that one people’s salvation must come at another’s destruction. I am committed to creating a world where this does not happen – and this cannot be done from within the Biden Administration.

My choice to leave is not a reflection of this office or the Department. I have felt supported by many individuals here, but I do not feel supported by the policies and actions of this Administration. I have the utmost respect for my colleagues at the Department who have given so much of themselves to doing the good work of preserving our public lands and strengthening Indian Country, and the many public servants across the federal government. I urge you all to take a stand for Palestinian lives. All our futures depend on this.

Respectfully,

Lily Greenberg Call

Ms Greenberg Call’s principled action and courageous, honest words will surely make her a target for the Israel lobby’s smear machine, just as it has targeted the many Jewish students standing up for humanity on university campuses. Her account was already briefly suspended by Twitter, presumably as a result of concerted action by pro-Israel groups:

Video: Israel-funded US senator calls for Gaza to be treated like Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Friend of genocide Lindsey Graham demands US keep sending Israel bombs to ‘finish the job’

US senator Lindsey Graham has demanded that the US keep sending Israel bombs to use on Palestinian civilians in Gaza – and has justified his demand by comparing Gaza to Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Japanese cities on which the US dropped atomic bombs to end Japan’s resistance in World War II.G

Graham has received over a million dollars from pro-Israel lobby groups:

Video from HiddenPalestine

Graham and his murderous ilk, like the Israeli far-right government, are outraged that Biden – in a move most think is a cynical attempt to rescue his re-election chances – has paused delivery of the largest bombs to Israel while it is invading Rafah, where more than a million starving Palestinians were corralled by Israeli forces. The friends of genocide are truly ready to annihilate everyone – men, women and children – to preserve the apartheid state. Their place is in The Hague.

Palestine Action occupy Elbit’s Leicester weapons factory

Published by Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 08/05/2024 - 11:46pm in

Activists from Palestine Action (PA) have again targeted Israeli weapons-maker Elbit’s Leicester drone factory, UAV Tactical Systems. One contingent used an articulated lorry to smash through a fence and act as a platform for two protesters. At the same time, another group scaled the building and currently occupy the roof of the drone production facility. Red paint has been sprayed across the building to symbolise the company’s involvement in spilling Palestinian blood. Those on the roof are said to have used tools to break through it.

UAV Tactical Systems is majority-owned by Israel’s largest weapons manufacturer, Elbit Systems — who manufacture 85% of Israel’s military drone fleet amongst other lethal arms and military software. Export licenses reveal that drone technologies are regularly exported from the factory to the apartheid state’s occupying military force.

According to Corporate Watch, the firm markets its products by describing them as ‘battle tested’.

According to War on Want, UAV Tactical Systems’ flagship Watchkeeper drone has been used by the British military in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the English Channel – but is modelled on the notorious Hermes 450 drone, that has been used in attacks on Gaza and Lebanon.

Elbit’s drones are regularly used by the Israeli military during the ongoing genocide in Gaza. According to human rights watchdog EuroMed Monitor, since October 7th the Israeli military has killed more than 40,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured more than double that number as well as destroying hospitals, schools and over 70,000 residential buildings. After forcing more than one million Palestinians to flee to Rafah in Gaza, the Israeli military has rejected a US/Qatar/Egypt-broked ceasefire deal it had previously agreed and is now invading the only supposed ‘safe zone’ left in the besieged strip.

The UK government has refused to impose any limitations on arms deals, even after three Britons and others were murdered by Israel in its triple bombing of a World Central Kitchen aid convoy.

Ahead of the action, one of the Palestine Action activists said:

This country is a signatory to the Genocide convention. These laws are not to be discounted just because it’s politically expedient. They were set up for a reason and I cannot accept that the country I was born in and have lived in all my life is deciding to flout those laws.

Another added:

If the government aren’t going to act, it is my personal, moral and legal right to take direct action.

Locals in Leicester have also been conducting a daily campaign against the weapons factory’s activities.

US declares Israeli units guilty of war crimes – but whitewashes them as ‘individual’ acts

Published by Anonymous (not verified) on Tue, 30/04/2024 - 6:33am in

US laws ban sale of arms if they might be used in war crimes – but there will be no pause

The US government has declared five Israeli army units guilty ‘gross violations of human rights’, according to the State Department.

However, while going through the motions of attributing guilt, the US has simultaneously whitewashed the IDF’s systematic genocide and war crimes by describing the crimes as “individual incidents of gross violations of human rights” against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank before the current genocidal onslaught – and claiming that the units in question have taken ‘remedial’ corrective measures.

No findings have been made against the IDF for its slaughter of more than 40,000 Palestinian civilians in Gaza, mostly women and children and including summary executions and deliberate bombing of families, schools and hospitals – despite the recent discovery of mass graves in Gaza and the advice of senior government officials to the State Department that Israel is committing war crimes with US-made weapons.

State Department spokespeople have told journalist that it has found no evidence that Israel is committing war crimes in its slaughter since 7 October. The US government is currently trying to stop the International Criminal Court issuing international arrest warrants for Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli ministers.

Israeli media: Israel ‘totally defeated’ – and terrified of Iran

Source close to discussions about Iran says millions would be fleeing Israel if they knew what was being said

Israeli media are often far more honest about what their country is doing – and what is going on in it – than western ‘mainstream’ media are about the same issues. While UK ‘msm’ still maintain the lie that Hamas ‘beheaded babies’ and raped women on 7 October, Israeli media sometimes freely discuss the truth – and frequently and openly write about the ‘immense’ numbers of Israelis killed that day by the Israeli military.

And now, Israeli media are discussing two further truths that will not be aired by UK broadcasters or printed by UK papers.

First, Haaretz – one of Israel’s major dailies – has splashed a headline concluding that Israel has lost – totally lost – the ‘war’, the genocide, it has been raining down on the innocent civilians of Gaza. Lost so badly that Israel cannot be secure – and will not either regain by force the captives taken by Hamas, or end its pariah status:

And second, journalists with sources close to the Israeli regime’s discussions about Iran – which yesterday achieved a measured but compelling attack on Israel in retaliation for Israel’s bombing of Iran’s consulate in Damascus – are saying openly that those discussions are so terrifying that if the Israeli populace knew what was being said, millions of them would be flooding Israel’s main international airport to try to get out of the country:

The UK government, opposition and media are incorrigibly dishonest about Israel’s genocide and its terrible consequences for the millions of innocents in Gaza and the West Bank – and the ruination of both Israel’s and the West’s always-thin pretence as democratic, humane and law-abiding. But the truth is out there – and will percolate through.

Video: friend of Israel Hodge says ‘very few dare’ in Labour to support Palestine

Published by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 11/04/2024 - 7:04am in

Newly-uncovered video from Labour’s last conference shows shocking comment – and Hodge falsely claiming fellow right-winger Luciana Berger needed ‘police protection’ to move around 2018 conference

A Times Radio video clip reveals right-wing Labour MP Margaret Hodge – who has continued to accept funds from Labour Friends of Israel to visit the country even during Israel’s genocide of Palestinians – telling interviewer John Pienaar that ‘very very few’ people within the Labour party ‘are daring to express support’ for Palestinians.

The clip, which does not appear to have been circulated before now, was posted by Steve Powers after he found it couched in a much longer video from the Murdoch station. Hodge then goes on to repeat the long-debunked claim, still (of course) widely circulated by right-wingers and the so-called ‘mainstream’ media, that former Labour/Tinge party/LibDem MP Luciana Berger needed a police escort to ‘get around’ the 2018 party conference, the last one she had attended before deserting the party:

Merseyside Police confirmed at the time that there was no special police detail for Berger, whom Keir Starmer has welcomed back into the party despite her efforts to prevent a Labour victory in 2019.

But even more damning is the arrogance of the claim – no doubt accurate under Starmer’s Stalinist, pro-genocide regime – just as Israel was preparing to launch its genocide, that ‘very very few’ would now ‘dare’ to show support for Palestinians.

Within the rotting shell that now passes for Labour, that may be correct – but the millions marching every weekend for freedom for Palestinians and an end to Israel’s war crimes make clear that Starmer’s Labour, like the blue version of the Tories, is utterly out of touch with the three quarters of the UK public who despise the murderousness that has killed and maimed more than 100,000 civilians, mostly women and children, and the apartheid states’s contempt for international law and want the genocide to end.

Exclusive: Graham attacks ‘phony’ old Unite member nos – that she managed

Published by Anonymous (not verified) on Sat, 30/03/2024 - 9:34am in

Union general secretary’s ‘unhinged’ letter to staff, officers and organisers continues to backfire as insiders say numbers she is now attacking were part of her job to report

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham’s bizarre letter to all the union’s staff last week, attempting to undermine a number of criticism that have been levelled at her and her management of the union, was described by union insiders as ‘unhinged’ and a ‘rant’ – and it continues to backfire.

As Skwawkbox has already covered, Graham told recipients that the union under her will always prioritise jobs in the weapons industry above the fight to stop Israel’s genocide in Gaza. Her letter also claimed that an unfavourable interim financial report had been faked wholesale and that the forger had gone to the extent of copying the font and layout of actual reports to fool members. The union did not respond to an enquiry whether it stood by the claim despite the screenshots of the report appearing to show that it was found on the union’s official ‘Sharepoint’ network. The letter also claimed the union’s financial value was ‘pushing up towards half a billion pounds’ – but insiders say that the value was already around half a billion when she took over two and a half years ago.

And another issue with Graham’s claims has arisen – relating to Unite’s membership figures. In an apparent attempt to refute union insiders’ claims that membership has fallen by more than two hundred thousand during her tenure, Graham wrote:

Despite inheriting membership figures that included 32,000 members on union funded subs (essentially free) and dealing with a 60,000 loss in aviation and other areas during Covid, the work we have all put in collectively has recouped these loses and more. Furthermore, we recorded an additional 16,647 net membership increase in 2023. These are real membership increases, not the phony [sic] figures of the past.

Emphasis added

One insider told Skwawkbox that the 32,000 ‘essentially free’ members were in fact members supported by Unite when they lost their jobs during the pandemic, so that they could retain their membership protections until they found new work.

But even more significantly, another said that before Ms Graham became general secretary, one of her key responsibilities as head of organising was to monitor and report on the membership – and that the membership figures before her tenure were therefore compiled and reported by her and her organising team.

The senior insider told Skwawkbox:

The figures she’s calling phoney are her own figures.

Skwawkbox wrote to Unite:

Another question with regard to Ms Graham’s email to officers, organisers and staff. This one concerns her claim of ‘phony [membership] figures of the past’. She wrote:

Despite inheriting membership figures that included 32,000 members on union funded subs (essentially free) and dealing with a 60,000 loss in aviation and other areas during Covid, the work we have all put in collectively has recouped these loses and more. Furthermore, we recorded an additional 16,647 net membership increase in 2023. These are real membership increases, not the phony figures of the past.

Ms Graham as head of organising was responsible for reporting membership figures to the general secretary and executive. Is she really saying that she submitted ‘phony’ [sic] numbers? By 5pm today, please.

At the time of writing, more than ninety minutes after the reply deadline provided as standard journalistic practice, no reply had been received from the union.

The outrage provoked by the letter is not the first time members have been angered over Sharon Graham’s position on Gaza. She has been alleged by insiders to have:

Her supporters also prevented debate and votes on Gaza at a meeting of the union’s elected executive earlier this month.

Her tenure as Unite boss has also been marked by a string of other allegations – which neither she nor the union has denied – including destruction of evidence against her husband in threat, misogyny and bullying complaints brought by union employees. She is also embroiled in both an employment tribunal for discrimination and a defamation lawsuit brought by Irish union legend Brendan Ogle for the union’s treatment of him and comments made about him by Graham and her close ally Tony Woodhouse.

According to human rights group Euro Med Monitor, since 7 October last year Israel has killed over 40,000 Palestinians in Gaza and wounded more than double that number, overwhelmingly women and children and many of them with life-changing injuries, while Gaza’s health and school systems have been bombed into collapse, often using US- and UK-made weapons and systems. More than a million people have been forcibly displaced and Gaza is in famine because of Israel’s blockade of food and vital supplies. Israel is formally on trial for genocide before the International Court of Justice and ordered to stop its slaughter – and has been found by UN human rights investigators to be committing genocide.

Exclusive: Graham claims financials ‘fake’ – but they were ‘on Unite Sharepoint’

Published by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 28/03/2024 - 8:14am in

‘Unhinged’ claim challenged by screenshots – no response from Unite to request to confirm whether union management stands by bizarre comment from general secretary in letter to all staff, officers and organisers

As Skwawkbox covered earlier today, Unite general secretary Sharon Graham sent a bizarre email to all the union’s organisers, staff and officers that was described as ‘unhinged’, ‘flailing’ and ‘a rant’ by union insiders – and called ‘disgusting’ for its prioritisation of weapons-making jobs over opposing Israel’s genocide in Gaza and Britain’s complicity in it.

As well as its section on Palestine, Graham’s letter also attempted to defuse criticism of the union’s financial management – by claiming that the ‘preliminary’ financial report circulating among astonished officers, members and activists is a forgery in which ‘those with much to lose’ even copied the font and layout of a real Unite finance report:

Fake Finance Document

Those with much to lose from the new way forward, including curtailing money given to outside organisations and the new industrial focus, have escalated actions by producing a fake Unite Finance Document for release on Social Media. Most recently appearing on social media. The document was headed “Unite Finance Report” and mirrored (down to the same font and layout) Unite’s usual finance report style.  This had the sole aim of discrediting the leadership but most importantly it undermined the Union. It stated that the Union’s financial position was in difficulty since the General Secretary election. This is untrue and is now being dealt with legally.

Ms Graham did not name ‘those with much to lose’ – but those challenging her claim have pointed out that the screenshots of the ‘fake finance document’ appear to show that it was screengrabbed directly from Unite’s ‘Sharepoint’ system:

Sharepoint, a Microsoft platform, is a “web-based collaborative platform that integrates natively with Microsoft 365 … primarily sold as a document management and storage system, although it is also used for sharing information through an intranet, implementing internal applications, and for implementing business processes.” The Unite address shown on the screengrabs appears to indicate that the document was at least stored, and potentially created, on the union’s own dedicated server. It is unclear against whom the issue “is now being dealt with legally”, since no supposed culprits are identified.

The claim was perceived as so outlandish that union activists have been contacting Skwawkbox all day about it. One said:

This is unhinged, she just looks like she’s flailing all over the place.

Another commented:

This is a rant and she’s sent it to everyone, what is she thinking?

Skwawkbox wrote to Unite’s press office:

Ms Graham’s letter referred to in my previous email today also claims Unite financials were a forgery and even that someone has copied the layout and font of genuine reports to fool people. The claim has been described by Unite recipients as ‘unhinged’. Screenshots of the report show that it came from the Unite Sharepoint – is the union really claiming this was faked and stored on the official network??

No response, apart from a confirmation of receipt, was received by the reply deadline of 5pm or since. It would be extraordinarily thorough for someone to go to the lengths of adding Sharepoint details to a fake, but Unite was given the opportunity to say that it believes this was done and has not done so.

Graham also told recipients that Unite’s finances were “pushing up towards half a billion pounds”. Skwawkbox understands that they were around half a billion pounds when she took over as general secretary.

As Skwawkbox showed earlier, Graham’s letter had disgusted many who read it because it said that the union will always prioritise weapons-making jobs over the need to fight Israel’s genocide in Gaza – and appeared to imply that those working in that sector didn’t care about them being used in the slaughter of Palestinian women and children.

Sharon Graham has been alleged by insiders to have:

Her supporters also prevented debate and votes on Gaza at a meeting of the union’s elected executive earlier this month.

Apart from the issue of Gaza, her tenure as Unite boss has also been marked by a string of other allegations – which neither she nor the union has denied – including destruction of evidence against her husband in threat, misogyny and bullying complaints brought by union employees.

The finance and Gaza comments are not the end of the issues with Graham’s email. Skwawkbox will cover further aspects shortly.

Graham tells staff/organisers Unite will always put arms jobs before fighting Gaza genocide

‘Unhinged’ letter to all staff, organisers and officers includes ‘disgusting’ section about Palestine

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham has sent a letter to all the union’s staff, organisers and officers that has been described as an ‘unhinged’ attempt to counter criticisms. Skwawkbox will publish analysis of the various sections separately – and will first cover what Unite figures have described as Graham’s ‘disgusting’ comments on Israel’s slaughter of Palestinian civilians in Gaza.

The letter claims that Graham and Unite have led on opposition to the mass murder in Gaza – despite Graham being widely criticised for her silence on the issue and insiders saying that she had to be pressured into a proper statement on Gaza at all.

And the section, which is titled ‘Palestine’, goes on to make clear that while Unite has given a one-off donation (one that Skwawkbox understands was given suddenly and without approval by Unite’s elected executive) to Doctors without Borders, Ms Graham and the union under her will always prioritise defence industry jobs above any outside issues, despite the union’s official, democratic position in support of sanctions and a boycott against Israel.

The full section reads:

Palestine

Of all the issues that have been used in these attacks, probably the most abhorrent is the attempted weaponisation of the conflict and the deaths of thousands of innocent civilians and the collective punishment of the people of Gaza.

Unite, through the General Secretary and the Chair of the Union and the Executive Council, was the first major union to publicly and unambiguously call for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. We were very clear. We have watched on with horror the bombardment and destruction of Gaza, and the unbearable terror, suffering and death of its innocent civilians. We have been unequivocal that the deliberate killing of civilians, hostage-taking and collective punishment are war crimes and should be identified as such.

Unite has also donated £50,000 to Médecins Sans Frontières/ Doctors Without Borders specifically to help the many victims of this horrific conflict. Most recently the General Secretary has written to the Palestinian General Federation of Trade Unions (PGFTU) offering our solidarity after the horrific bombing of their Gaza headquarters which, alongside providing services to workers, was also functioning as a kindergarten and bakery.

However, we cannot and will not endorse any organisation which decides unilaterally and without any discussion (let alone agreement) with the workers themselves, to support the targeting of our members’ workplaces or their jobs. To be clear, this will not happen. No outside body, no matter what their political position, will be allowed to dictate terms to our Union and our members.

It is important to highlight here that it is a core principle of Unite that as a trade union the ‘first claim’ on our priorities is always the protection and advancement of our members’ interests at work. It is very simple. Unite cannot and never will advocate or support any course of action which is counter to that principle. We are a trade union, not a political party or single-issue campaign group.

Therefore, there is no contradiction for a trade union to hold a position of solidarity with Palestinian workers, while at the same time refusing to support campaigns that target our members’ workplaces without their support. Similarly, we cannot be expected to affiliate to organisations that actively work against our members and their jobs.

Examples include groups that look to build networks inside trade unions to undermine the defence industry or demand the disbandment of NATO and AUKUS. Whatever anyone may think personally about those objectives is irrelevant. We are a trade union with thousands of members employed in the defence industry. It is the views of affected members that take precedence in a trade union. That will not change and nor should it. Unite members have recently been attacked directly, been spat at and called “child killers”. We cannot and will not endorse this.

Emphases added

One furious senior insider told Skwawkbox:

She’s effectively saying members working in defence don’t care if what they make ends up killing women and children in Gaza – only jobs matter. Has she bothered asking any of them?

Another said:

Unite’s official position, democratically reached repeatedly at conference and confirmed again just last summer, is that it supports Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against Israel. We didn’t add ‘except where it might affect defence jobs’. We’ve also voted for the end of trade agreements with Israel. This is disgusting by Sharon.

Sharon Graham has been alleged by insiders to have:

Her supporters also prevented debate and votes on Gaza at a meeting of the union’s elected executive earlier this month.

Unite was contacted for comment but did not respond by the press deadline.

Video: EGM leak reveals RCP ‘refusing to answer patient safety questions’ and more

Published by Anonymous (not verified) on Mon, 18/03/2024 - 10:56am in

Clips from 2-hour leaked extraordinary general meeting appear to show Royal College of Physicians avoiding scrutiny – but making damning admission of financial conflict of interests in government’s expansion of ‘non-doctor-doctor’ roles

A leaked video of the entire ‘extraordinary general meeting’ (EGM) of the Royal College of Physicians (RCP), called by doctors to try to force a slow-down in the roll-out of the government’s expansion of the use of non-medically-trained staff in ‘doctor’ roles, has revealed comments and obfuscation that have led medical professionals to call for the resignation of senior RCP officers. One has already resigned.

A number of patients have already died avoidably because of errors by ‘physician associates’ (PA), who have only two years’ training compared the seven-plus years completed by doctors. A Doctors’ Association UK survey has found ‘deeply disturbing’ abuse of the PA role in NHS trusts.

Keele University cardiology Professor Mamas A Mamas wrote of the leaked video:

The ‘PlatinumPizza’ Twitter/X account has posted a number of excerpts from the EGM video highlighting what it feels are the most noteworthy evasions and obfuscations. The first two reveal that, while the RCP claims that PAs must complete national exams, a freedom of information request revealed that this can be bypassed – and that the RCP, which criticised a far more comprehensive survey by the British Medical Association (BMA) as biased, in fact skews the results of its own small survey to present a falsely positive outlook:

Doctors participating in the EGM also raised the issue of the fact that PAs are paid more than the junior doctors who often have to supervise them (and can be held to blame if a PA screws up) – but the RCP said it was ‘not a union’ and not interested in getting involved in pay issues:

Next, the first of two posts about the RCP’s prioritisation of its finances above what nine out of ten doctors feels is a grave threat to patient safety:

And then the second, which shows the RCP’s treasurer admitting/warning that the RCP could stand to lose millions if the PA expansion is halted or even slowed down – and the RCP apparently disagreeing with the RCP of a short while below about being a ‘union’, at least when it comes to ensuring PAs have jobs:

And, adding farce to the ‘contempt’ of which doctors accused the RCP after the meeting, the panel refuses to say what additional benefit a PA brings to a ‘multi-disciplinary team’ that is not already present in the mix – rounded off by a clip of a doctor warning of the dangers of pressing ahead with the whole damaging system:

And in a clip not included in the thread but created by Skwawkbox, one of the movers of the motion for the expansion to be slowed down until it can be shown to be safe for patients explains why it is so important for voting members of the RCP to support it, despite the RCP management’s recommendation to reject it and plough on:

Other discussions during the meeting included the panel failing to explain how it was going to ‘hold the government to account’ for the safe functioning of the system, as it had claimed it would – and treating the mere inclusion of any extra doctors in the government’s ‘long-term workforce plan’ as an achievement by the RCP.

The use of PAs, which is considered by nine out of ten doctors to be dangerous to patients and confuses many patients, who do not realise that they have not been seen and treated by a fully-qualified medic, is being pushed by the government as a way of ‘downskilling’ the NHS, reducing costs and allowing increased profits for private providers, under the guise of the so-called ‘NHS Workforce Plan’ as part of the ‘Integrated Care Systems’ (ICS) project.

ICS, formerly called ‘Accountable Care Organisations’ (ACOs) after the US system it copied, were renamed after awareness began to spread that ACOs were a system for withholding care from patients and that care providers were incentivised to cut care because they receive a share of the ‘savings’. The system remained the same, but the rebranding disguised the reality.

The government used a ‘statutory instrument’ (SI) to pass these changes, avoiding proper parliamentary scrutiny, but both the Tories and Keir Starmer’s Labour support these and other measures to cheapen the NHS for private involvement and only independent MP Claudia Webbe spoke against them during the brief SI debate. Green peer Natalie Bennett’s motion in the House of Lords to attempt to kill the instrument was defeated by the Tories with the help of Labour peers.
