Breaking Biden says US may drop Assange case

Published by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 11/04/2024 - 3:46am in

A genuine indication of sense from US president – or more mind games?

US president Joe Biden has said that the US is ‘considering’ abandoning the country’s attempt to extradite persecuted Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, in response to a request from the Australian government. Assange has been held in Belmarsh prison for years while his legal team attempts to fight a case that should have been thrown out when the main US witness admitted he had been lying when he said that Assange arranged the hacking of US systems.

Last month, the High Court kept Assange in prison when it ruled that the US could have more time to provide assurances that it would not impose a death penalty on the Australian journalist, even though it admitted that the US was attacking his right to free speech in a way it would not do to one of its own citizens.

Before his imprisonment, Assange was effectively kept captive for years in the Ecuadorian embassy when the UK refused to stop trying to extradite him to Sweden, which Assange’s supporters feared was an indirect route to handing him to the US, despite Sweden dropping discredited rape allegations. The US has pursued Assange in vengeance for Wikileaks exposing war crimes by US military.

Last month, the US leaked hints that it might accept a ‘plea deal’ and drop the extradition in return for Assange accepting a lesser conviction – still an outright attack on journalistic freedom and the public’s right to know what their governments are doing. Biden’s latest comment may be more mind games and those who support Assange and the importance of press freedom to a functioning democracy should not let up on their pressure until the case is formally dropped and Assange is free, as he should have been all along.

Machine Learning and the Carnage in Gaza

Published by Anonymous (not verified) on Mon, 08/04/2024 - 8:35pm in

Are we witnessing the first AI-assisted genocide? Reports that Israel is using untested AI systems to exact deadly air strikes with a lenient civilian casualty margin may seem beyond imagination, but make no mistake, Machine Learning is the future of war.

The Israeli-Palestinian publication +972 Magazine and Hebrew-language media outlet Local Call reported recently that the Israeli army was isolating and identifying thousands of Palestinians as potential bombing targets using an AI-assisted targeting system called Lavender.

Reports suggest that the Lavender system created a kill list of Hamas or militia operatives or associates and that these individuals were often targeted in their family home, with sources citing that 15 to 20 civilian casualties were deemed permissible for a junior-level target, and upwards of 100 civilian casualties were permissible for a senior commander.

For lower-level targets, so-called dumb bombs were reportedly used, these unguided munitions typically pose a greater threat to civilians, particularly in regions as densely populated as Gaza. US Intelligence reports from December indicated that 40 to 45 per cent of air-to-ground missiles launched by Israel were dumb bombs.

The new wave of AI advances aligns with three primary military uses; autonomous weapons systems, cyber warfare, and underpinning military support systems in decision-making.

The danger is, as with many other fields related to AI, there is no established ethical framework or legal structure, militaries are investing heavily in AI technology, but without a human-centred approach with clear regulations and an adherence to international human rights law, the proliferation and autonomy of Machine Learning in war is incredibly dangerous.

Drones have been implemented in combat for years; between 2009 and 2017, the number of American soldiers on the battlefield has decreased by 90% and the number of U.S. drone strikes increased tenfold. Today, U.S., Russian, Israeli, Chinese, Iranian, and Turkish drones are flying attacks in the Middle East, the African continent, Southeast Asia, and Europe.

The advent of Machine Learning and innovation within the field of AI technology has paved the way for fully autonomous weapons, the use of which has already been documented in Ukraine. The Saker Scout, an autonomous drone, can identify 64 different types of Russian ‘military objects’ and launch an attack without human oversight.

Autonomous weapons systems that enable advanced AI systems to execute deadly strikes pose an unprecedented threat and demand critical scrutiny around compliance with international human rights and ethical standards. Are we really willing to entrust an algorithm with the lives and deaths of human beings?

The Lavender software system reportedly used in Israel analyses information collected on most of the 2.3 million residents of the Gaza Strip through a system of mass surveillance, then assesses and ranks each particular person based on the extent of their perceived involvement in the military wing of Hamas or other terrorist militias. According to sources, the machine gives almost every single person in Gaza a rating from 1 to 100, expressing how likely it is that they are a militant.

Lavender uses machine learning technology to identify characteristics of known Hamas and militia operatives, whose information was fed to the machine as training data, and then to locate these same characteristics among the general population, the sources explained. An individual found to have several different incriminating features will automatically becomes a potential target for assassination, along with anyone else deemed expendable who happens to be caught within the accepted causality radius. The reports have been widely condemned with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressing serious concern last week.

Israel’s war offensive in Gaza has become one of the deadliest conflicts of the 21st century; between 7 October 2023 and 7 April 2024 at least 33,175 Palestinians were killed, and 75,886 Palestinians were injured. According to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, fatalities include over 14,000 children and 9,220 women. In the first 100 days alone Israel dropped eight times the total number of bombs the United States dropped in Iraq over a six-year period. 196 aid workers have been killed, along with 105 journalists. Foreign media continues to be denied access to the besieged enclave.

Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur on Human Rights in the Palestinian Occupied territories says she believes Israel has committed “acts of genocide” in Gaza. In January the International Court of Justice (ICJ) found it plausible that Israel’s acts could amount to genocide, ordering six interim measures that Israel must take to prevent genocide. Since the ICJ ruling a further 6,918 Palestinians have been killed, and famine has set in with Palestinians now accounting for some 80 per cent of those facing famine worldwide.

Could the use of untested AI technology with minimal human oversight be contributing to the scale of death and destruction in Gaza? And if so, who bears responsibility? As with most bleeding-edge technology, AI was always destined for the battlefield, but according to these reports the cold reasoning of Machine Learning has been quickly promoted to degrees of autonomy historically reserved for only the darkest dystopian horror Science Fiction writers could imagine.

Rapidly advancing technology weaponised in this way sets a dangerous precedent. It is an established principle within the laws of war that civilians are to be protected. Relying on a computer-based system to identify civilians and combatants without human analysis of the raw data, and with pre-programmed allowances for civilian casualties could constitute a breach of international humanitarian law.

The US Department of Defence has released a series of policies on military AI, most recently the Data, Analytics, and AI Adoption Strategy released in November of 2023. The report includes a series of user guidelines, including ensuring military AI systems are auditable and that high-consequence applications undergo senior-level review. Whilst this work is essential in starting the necessary conversations around regulation, the guidelines in the report are non-binding and unenforceable. The International community must work at pace to create an enforceable international framework that limits the risks of Machine Learning in warfare.

The Lavender system, on the surface, could be considered a decision support system; one of any number of computerised tools which may use AI-based software to produce analysis to inform military decision-making. These systems collate evidence and combine data sources in order to identify people or objects and to make recommendations for military operations, or predictions about future situations.

Where the use of Lavender has veered into alarming territory is that these recommendations are seemingly being accepted as orders. The damage of empowering machines to make life-and-death decisions may only become apparent in the aftermath of Israel’s assault on Gaza, by which point the threat to humanity may already be too grave to mitigate.

Yemen ‘promises Iran 400,000 troops’ in event of regional war

Fighters “ready to completely blockade the Red Sea and target US bases in Africa and the Middle East”, says Iran Observer

Yemen has promised Iran the support of 400,000 troops if regional war breaks out after Israel’s bombing of the Iranian embassy in Syria to murder a top Iranian military officer, Iran Observer Twitter/X account has said this afternoon. The account, which has 233,000 followers and appears to have access to a stream of information from within the region, notes that Yemen has recruited 200,000 additional fighters since Israel began its genocidal assault on the Palestinians in Gaza and says that the fighters are:

ready to completely blockade the Red Sea and target US bases in Africa and the Middle East.

The news came as Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Lebanon appeared to warn that the group’s relative restraint so far in the face of Israel’s attacks on homes and bases in Lebanon had run out and that ‘all scenarios’ are possible. Yemen’s Houthis have been attacking – in response to the International Court of Justice’s findings against Israel – Israel-bound and -owned shipping off its coast, undeterred by attacks by the UK and US, whose governments continue to collude in Israel’s genocide in Gaza, which has killed and maimed well over 100,000 people so far, mostly women and children, and has put more than two million into famine.

Video: Miriam Margolyes’s powerful statement on ‘vicious, genocidal’ Israel

Published by Anonymous (not verified) on Sun, 07/04/2024 - 9:06pm in

Jewish actress posts no-holds-barred video supporting Jewish Council of Australia, attacked by Zionists for ceasefire call

Jewish actress and national treasure Miriam Margolyes, a joint UK and Australian citizen, has posted a video supporting the Jewish Council of Australia (JCA) call for an immediate and permanent halt to Israel’s genocidal assault on Gaza – along with the imposition of sanctions and an immediate end to Australia’s military ties with Israel.

The JCA has been heavily attacked by pro-Israel groups for the call, with the attacks following similar lines to the dismissal in the UK of left-wing Jewish groups by right-wing nationalist organisations and politicians.

In her video, Margolyes says she has never been more ashamed of Israel – which she described as a ‘vicious, genocidal, nationalist nation’:

Despite the antisemitic representation by western governments and media as if all Jews support Israel, very many do not – and even many who have supported it are disgusted by Israel’s mass murder of, so far, more than forty thousand Palestinian civilians, overwhelmingly women and children, and the blockade and assaults it is using to starve two million more. The UK and Australian establishments continue their complicity in Israel’s war crimes.

Video: Israel’s ‘error’ killing of WCK food aid workers was 3 attacks over 1.5 miles

Published by Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 03/04/2024 - 10:43am in

‘Error’? The facts say different but western governments still complicit

Israel has claimed that its slaughter of seven World Central Kitchen food aid workers was an ‘error’ and says it is investigating. The attack consisted of three separate bombings – across a distance of 2.4km.

And as a White House correspondent pointed out in questions to government spokesperson John Kirby this evening, the attacks were spread across time, too – with the first strike hitting one vehicle then two more as survivors tried to escape with their wounded in the remaining two: an attack designed to make sure no one got out of it alive:

The ‘error’ also happens to have achieved Israel’s objective of cutting off the only remaining significant supply of food to the two million civilians of Gaza – WCK fed some half million Palestinians – after Netanyahu ordered his forces to prevent any shipping of food by UN agency UNRWA.

Yet the US and UK political establishments remain more than happy to collude in Israel’s fictions – and to allow the war criminals to investigate themselves. The UK has not even ordered Israel’s far-right ambassador to appear to explain Israel’s actions, despite at least one UK citizen being among the murder victims.

Unite 4 Gaza slams Graham’s ‘extraordinary’ attack on anti-genocide campaigners

Published by Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 03/04/2024 - 7:54am in

Letter from ‘war monger’ attempting to justify her conduct and silence continues to backfire as anti-genocide group condemns betrayal of Palestinian civilians and of workers and movement

Unite members who have formed a group to campaign against Israel’s genocide in Gaza have written a response to the union’s general secretary Sharon Graham’s letter last week attempting to justify her lack of action to support Palestinians:

Response to the Statement by Sharon Graham on Palestine

On 26 March Sharon Graham, the General Secretary of Unite, and Andy Green, Chair of the Executive, issued an extraordinary statement attacking Palestine solidarity supporters. In particular it attempted to justify the leadership’s refusal to give any support to the Palestinians or Unite members campaigning to end Israel’s genocide in Gaza.

When Israel launched its attack on Gaza Unite issued a statement on 16 October which ‘unreservedly’ condemned and expressed its ‘revulsion’ over Israeli deaths on October 7 whilst merely ‘deploring’ the mass murder of women and children in Gaza.

It was only after concerted protests by Unite activists that after 4 weeks Unite issued a second statement on 3 November calling for an ‘immediate unconditional ceasefire by all parties in Israel and Gaza.’ There was no mention of Israel’s genocidal attack on Gaza.

Since then there has been radio silence. There has been no publicity about the national demonstrations and no support for members wanting to take solidarity action. Despite repeated protests and petitions by members Sharon Graham has failed to attend or speak at the national demonstrations. Graham even tried to persuade Peter Kavanagh of London & Eastern Region not to speak.

Unite did absolutely nothing until a letter was sent on 25 March to the Palestinian trade union PGFTU, whose offices in Gaza had been bombed more than two weeks previously on 7 March. The timing of this letter was no coincidence. It was sent one day before her statement.

The letter offered nothing but empty words. Graham and Green are explicit in their opposition to an arms embargo on Israel or persuading workers to refuse to handle arms intended for genocide.

Graham’s letter referred to Unite’s ‘longstanding policy’ but fails to mention that Unite policy includes ‘full support for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions’. This policy does not even appear on Unite’s website. For that you have to go to the United Left site.

Graham boasts that ‘Unite was the first major union to publicly and unambiguously call for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.’ This is not true. UNISON called for an immediate ceasefire on 26 October and on 18 October condemned Israel’s attack on the Al Ahli hospital killing nearly 500 people.

Graham has remained silent about the attacks on Gaza’s hospitals, ambulances and health care system and now its execution of children at Al Shifa Hospital.

The remainder of Sharon Graham’s letter represents a disgraceful defence of the arms industry and an attack on those who seek to ‘to undermine the defence industry or demand the disbandment of NATO and AUKUS.’ It is an industry whose purpose includes enabling genocide in Gaza and a possible nuclear war with China and Russia.

Sharon Graham has openly come out as a war monger who hides her aims behind the need to preserve jobs at any cost. We reject the argument that Unite must support war because our members’ jobs depend on it. A society where an increasing proportion of national wealth is geared to the manufacture of armaments is to the detriment of all our members.

When imperialism wages war it is workers who lose their lives. Yes there is a contradiction between representing members in the war industry and opposing imperialist wars. That is why we support the diversification of arms production into making useful goods that benefit humanity.

The idea that we must defend every job, even when it involves the murder of thousands of children is one we reject. Trade unions have historically fought for peace not war, against fascism, imperialism and racism.

Sharon Graham spits on the memory of the Rolls Royce workers in East Kilbride who, in 1973, refused to work on the engines of Chilean aircraft which had taken an active part in Pinochet’s fascist coup. A strong trade union organisation ensured that the Chilean airforce was all but grounded. Eventually it fell to Israel and South Africa to service these aircraft.

International solidarity is in the interests of all workers. Without solidarity the capitalist class can play divide and rule. Rather than building solidarity across national borders Sharon Graham prefers to play the role of a British nationalist wedded to Zionism.

Arms production is highly capital intensive. Britain’s ‘defence’ budget has steadily increased at the same time as cuts to the NHS and social services budgets. UNITE also has workers in the NHS, local government and social services. Unite members also use the NHS and are being forced to wait longer for treatment because of the cuts that enable increased military expenditure.

UNITE and its predecessor unions have a proud tradition of international solidarity. Former General Secretary of the TGWU, Jack Jones, fought in Spain against the fascists. At the time of Apartheid in South Africa we supported the struggle for liberation. An injury to one is an injury to all. We live in a society in which war is in the interests of capitalism not the working class.

Sharon Graham’s statement is an open declaration of war against those who support BDS and the liberation of the Palestinian people. The liberation of the Palestinians from Israeli Apartheid and an end to imperialist war is in the interests of all members of Unite.

Sharon Graham asserts that we are a trade union not a political party. Trade unions have historically recognised that strikes alone are not enough. We cannot achieve our economic aims without a political struggle for socialism. The NHS would never have been created if Graham’s miserable, short-sighted, dog eat dog vision had been adopted.

Today the Labour Party has abandoned the working class and embraced the neo-liberal advocates of free market capitalism. About this Graham has nothing to say.

Implicit in Graham’s statement is a threat to the affiliation to Stop the War Coalition and Palestine Solidarity Campaign. Already the affiliation to StWC has been suspended.

We call on Unite to break from Keir Starmer’s support for genocide, his embrace of NATO and neo-liberal economics and to fight for a socialist society which is free from the fear of war. We salute those who have campaigned to close Israel’s arms factories in Britain and we particularly welcome the closure of Elbit’s factory in Tamworth as a result of Palestine Action’s campaign.

See also Labour CND statement: why Unite the Union is wrong to attack groups picketing weapons manufacturing companies.

Unite 4 Palestine
1st April 2024

Unite was contacted for comment and given a copy of the statement, but did not respond.

In addition to the issues raised by Unite 4 Gaza, Sharon Graham has been alleged by insiders to have:

Her supporters also prevented debate and votes on Gaza at a meeting of the union’s elected executive earlier this month.

According to human rights group Euro Med Monitor, since 7 October last year Israel has killed over 40,000 Palestinians in Gaza and wounded more than double that number, overwhelmingly women and children and many of them with life-changing injuries, while Gaza’s health and school systems have been bombed into collapse, often using US- and UK-made weapons and systems. More than a million people have been forcibly displaced and Gaza is in famine because of Israel’s blockade of food and vital supplies. Israel is formally on trial for genocide before the International Court of Justice and ordered to stop its slaughter – and has been found by UN human rights investigators to be committing genocide.

Labour frontbencher McFadden: Israel is an ally and Labour will continue arms sales

Published by Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 03/04/2024 - 4:16am in

Sky News shows Starmer’s Labour happy to turn blind eye to clear genocide

Pat McFadden, a Starmer front-bencher, has made clear during an interview with Sky News this morning that Labour considers Israel an ‘ally’ and is happy to continue selling weapons to the genocidal regime if Labour gets into government.

And McFadden – who must know, like the rest of the country since last weekend’s leaked recording, that the government has already been told by its lawyers that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza and is covering it up – tried to hide behind the government’s failure to state the obvious, to excuse his and his boss’s readiness to keep providing Israel with arms that are killing Palestinians and international aid workers:

Video grab by Saul Staniforth, subtitling by Skwawkbox

McFadden also blathered about hostages, even though it is clear that Netanyahu and co are killing Israeli hostages as well as tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians – and, of course, did not once refer either to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) findings against Israel, Israel’s flouting of the ICJ’s orders to end its starvation and bombing of Gaza, or the UN Special Rapporteur for occupied Palestine’s confirmation that Israel is, as we all knew, committing genocide.

McFadden is a vice-chair of the Zionist group Labour Friends of Israel of which Keir Starmer is an avid supporter – or as it should now accurately be named, Labour: friends of genocide.

Exclusive: Foreign Office has not summoned Israel ambassador over murder of UK food workers

Published by Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 03/04/2024 - 1:29am in

7 World Central Kitchen workers murdered in air strike as they delivered food to starving Palestinians – but while Australia has summoned ambassador over killing of its citizen, UK has not

The UK government has not summoned the Israeli ambassador to account for the murder of seven food charity workers, including British citizens.

The group also included Palestinians, an Australian, a US-Canadian and a Polish citizen, as well as British. The convoy of three vehicles was bombed despite World Central Kitchen (WCK) coordinating its departure with Israeli forces, according to the Charity’s spokesperson.

All three trucks, which were spaced at least 500m from each other, were hit.

Israel has admitted carrying out the attack, which it claims was an accident. WCK has now suspended its operations, leaving Palestinians even deeper in famine after Israel blocked all deliveries by UNRWA, the UN’s relief agency for Palestinians.

According to the UN and World Health Organization, approaching two million Palestinians in Gaza are in, or at risk of, starvation because of Israel’s blockade.

The Australian Prime Minister has ordered the Israeli ambassador to attend an urgent meeting to account for Israel’s murder of the charity workers. However, the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) press office told Skwawkbox, in response to an enquiry whether the UK had done the same, that the FCDO had nothing to add to David Cameron’s tweet. Number 10 said the matter was being dealt with by the FCDO).

Cameron’s tweet has been shared by the FCDO, but that’s all

The UK government has been exposed covering up the legal advice of its own lawyers that Israel is committing war crimes in it’s mass slaughter of over 40,000 Gaza civilians, it’s wounding of 80,000 more and its imposed famine.

Israeli forces execute 13 CHILDREN near Al Shifa hospital

Published by Anonymous (not verified) on Mon, 01/04/2024 - 9:58am in

Human rights organisation reports further IDF war crimes

Image: Euro Med Monitor

Human rights group Euro Med Monitor )EMM) has reported another “blatant violation of international law” by Israeli occupation forces during the IDF’s assault on Gaza’s Al Shifa hospital. Israeli soldiers have executed at least 13 children near the hospital, a shameless war crime and a crime against humanity.

EMM reports that for almost two weeks Israeli forces have carried out prolonged and deadly operations at the hospital, including extrajudicial executions and deliberate killings of Palestinian civilians that have been widely attested. The murdered children were between the ages of four and 16, some inside their family home and others as they tried to flee via supposedly ‘safe’ routes after being ordered to evacuate or face being bombed. Israeli troops also fired on those trying to help the children.

The news of the infanticides comes as video emerged of IDF forces shooting men holding white flags as they tried to leave the area, then bulldozing the bodies – an apparent show of contempt for the International Court of Justice’s order to allow immediate humanitarian aid into Gaza, which Israel has ignored.

In pictures: Liverpool turns out in force for Gaza

Published by Anonymous (not verified) on Sun, 31/03/2024 - 6:41am in

Large gathering dominates famous station frontage as crowd chants for an end to Israel’s genocide

Hundreds turned out on Easter Saturday to demonstrate at Liverpool’s famous Lime Street Station today to demand an end to Israel’s genocide and war crimes against the Palestinian people in Gaza. The first real spring day did justice to the banners and flags and the large crowd was supplemented by passers-by as shoppers paused to find out more and then join in:

Liverpool Community Independents leader Alan Gibbons is a stalwart of the Gaza protests

Liverpool women hold ‘babies’ to symbolise Israel’s slaughter of Gaza’s children

The protest came in a week where a growing number of countries reinstated their support for the UN’s Gaza relief agency UNRWA – and as Ireland, the ancestral home of so many scousers, announced that it would formally join South Africa’s genocide case against Israel.

According to human rights agency Euro Med Monitor, Israel has already killed well over 40,000 civilians in Gaza, mostly women and children, and has wounded and maimed at least twice that number, with the death toll now accelerating even further as the famine imposed by Israel on Gaza’s two million plus inhabitants bites. Israel continues to flout international law and is now ignoring the International Court of Justice’s orders to allow immediate, unfettered, mass access of humanitarian aid and has blocked UNRWA’s access to distribute and deliver, while allowing far-right Israeli groups to block shipments and using starvation as a weapon.
