The “Philosophers Against Malaria” fundraising competition among departments of philosophy has concluded, and in total generated $27,089.

That’s enough to buy over 10,000 mosquito nets, says fundraiser organizer and philosophy PhD student Malte Hendrickx (Michigan), who shares the competition results:

Michigan came in first—I hope my home department sees the win as compensation for the relentless nagging they had to endure.

Virginia Tech came second, propelled by an incredibly generous anonymous contributor who gave $7200, the largest donation of this year.

The University of Colorado, Boulder came third, helped by the generosity of graduate student Kyle York, who offered to match donations by his department.

You can check out the results of the competition here.

The Future of Philosophy Journals

Published by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 14/12/2023 - 11:20pm in

“What is the future of philosophy journals?”

That’s the question at the heart of an upcoming open online event taking place on Wednesday, January 17th.

“The Future of Transformative Journals in Philosophy” is organized by the Open Access working group—Sophia Crüwell (Cambridge), Chiara Lisciandra (Utrecht), and  David Teira (UNED). They write:

Many publishers (like Springer or Elsevier) have declared their journals “transformative”, hoping to transition to a Gold Open Access regime, in which all papers will be freely accessible, since their authors will have covered the costs with an Author Processing Charge. But while opening access to scientific publications enables a wider circulation of scientific work, this might come at the cost of hindering access to scientific contributions from authors, institutions, or countries with limited funding opportunities. European funding bodies, like the Coalition S, are now surveying the scientific community to grasp its views on this process.

The 90 minute session will have a quick introductory overview of the situation, delivered by an expert librarian, followed by a panel discussion with four journal editors and an open debate with the participants. Throughout the discussion, we will reflect on the steps to take in response to current challenges, our options as editors, and prospects for developing alternative publishing models. Overall, the session will provide a critical examination of the evolving landscape of academic publishing in philosophy.

More information and registration are here.

Session on the Journal of Political Philosophy at Upcoming APA

Events, editors

The upcoming Eastern Division meeting of the American Philosophical Association (APA) will include a session on the Journal of Political Philosophy, in light of the uproar following the decision of its publisher, Wiley, to fire the journal’s editor and founder, Robert Goodin (ANU).

The decision, made in April, is scheduled to take effect at the end of this month.

In protest of the decision, the rest of the journal’s editorial team and its advisory board resigned.

The decision prompted a statement of non-cooperation with the journal that, as of today, has been signed by 1107 academics who work in areas covered by the journal. The statement says:

In light of:

      • the recent decision taken by John Wiley and Sons to terminate Prof. Robert Goodin’s editorship of the Journal of Political Philosophy at the end of 2023,
      • the consequent resignations of the vast majority of the journal’s editorial board,
      • and the inadequate explanation offered by Wiley as to their decision,

we the undersigned resolve, from the point at which Prof. Goodin is no longer the editor of the journal, to:

      • decline any invitation to join the editorial board of the journal,
      • refuse any request to review papers submitted for publication in the journal, and
      • refrain from submitting any papers for publication in the journal

unless and until:

      • the decision to terminate Prof. Goodin’s editorship is rescinded,
      • full editorial independence of the editors over the journal’s publications is restored, and
      • all questions concerning the future relationship between Wiley and the journal are resolved to the satisfaction of the editorial board as recently constituted.

The session is being put on by Wiley as part of the group program. Here’s the description:

Wiley is hosting an open session as a space for the community to discuss the Journal of Political Philosophy. Dr. Hannah Reed, Journal Publisher, and Rebecca Walter, Director of Social Sciences & Humanities Journals, will talk openly regarding recent events, will be happy to field questions, and welcome engagement from the community to guide the journal to a successful future.

It is taking place Wednesday, January 17th, at 11:00am.

Philosophers who work in political philosophy and related areas, philosophers concerned with the relationship between for-profit publishers and academic workers, and philosophers who value editorial independence, among others, may be interested in attending the session.

It is not known whether Wiley’s efforts to constitute a new editorial team for the journal have been successful.

As Gaza burns, Labour organises ‘Keir-aoke’ to raise party funds

Starmer’s party isn’t satisfied with making us cringe through billionaire donations, support for war crimes and contempt for Palestinian suffering

With more than 20,000 slaughtered in Gaza by Israel – around half of them children – and many more maimed, Keir Starmer is rightly facing jeers and heckling everywhere he goes, because of his support for Israel’s ‘right’ to ‘defend itself’ by the mass murder of civilians and the razing of schools, hospitals and homes.

Labour’s response? A fundraiser titled ‘Keir-aoke’ – not to raise funds for oppressed Palestinians facing an illegal occupation and an apartheid system that treats them as lower than animals, but for whatever purposes the party thinks fit:

Despite donations from billionaires and corporations, Labour is still telling its members that it depends on their donations to survive – but clearly the regime’s numerous begging letters aren’t getting a good response and the party machine is somehow deluded enough to think mutilating language to name an event after Starmer is going to be more, not less appealing.

The lowest price for a ticket to this cringe-fest is £16.96 (but only for ‘concessions’), though people can save money by not going and instead buying – seriously – a ‘solidarity’ ticket for a mere £15:

Labour has already had to cancel one event because of protests by human rights supporters outraged by Starmer’s and local MP Steve Reed’s enthusiastic support for genocide, but the party is clearly not inclined to think, let alone learn, and its delusion runs deep.

Meanwhile, people with actual human feeling will be marching in their hundreds of thousands, in London and around the country, for justice, a ceasefire and an end to the illegal occupation of Palestine:

Check here for the actions near you – but be aware that at the time of writing, the PSC event page appears to be under an attack that is suspiciously affecting only that page on the PSC’s website.
