The Third Doctor himself – the great Jon Pertwee – often had trouble escaping the Daleks, clocking up three stories with this malevolent alien race over his five series in the role. And now they’re back to bedevil him once more in this tense thriller by the fiendishly inventive Steve Lyons.

Katy Manning, who played Jo alongside the Third Doctor, reads the story, which centres on an escape room. Three young graduates and their tutor race against time to crack codes, open the exit door and obtain ‘A New Life’. The Doctor observes proceedings, but he begins to suspect that something far more sinister lurks on the other side of the door…

Will our newfound friends avoid extermination? You can find out, by entering this competition! FIVE lucky readers will win a copy on CD (RRP £11 – also available as a download, RRP £14). Just send us the answer to the question below:

Odds on Who / Ratings competition

BBC Studios (James Pardon))

After some six years Doctor Who has returned to Christmas Day, which of course makes it a candidate for being the most watched show on the day!

Though it is unlikely to make the top slot tomorrow - the King's Speech is almost certainly going to have that honour owing to its simultaneous showing across the major broadcasters - the bookies seem to generally agree that The Church On Ruby Road might well be the second-most watched programme of the day at 6-1! This is followed up by Call The Midwife at 8-1, and both Eastenders and Strictly Come Dancing at 9-1. ITV1 shows include Coronation Street at 16-1 and Emmerdale at 25-1.

Of course with six years between Christmas Specials, it's been six years since our ratings competition for Christmas Day, and this year you can win a copy of The Church On Ruby Road on Blu-ray or DVD. To enter, simply email us at comp-ratings@doctorwhonews.net with your name and the consolidated one week figure you expect the episode to achieve, as reported by BARB early next year.

Please specify the number in millions to 3 decimal places, for example 6.848m as achieved by The Giggle at the start of the month. For guidance, the highest rated non-King's speech programme last year was 7.814m achieved by Call The Midwife, who also took the 'silver crown' in 2021 with 7.831m.

The competition is open to UK residents, the closing date is Tuesday 26 December at 8:00am.

Toby Longworth – who, among many roles in Doctor Who audios, once played Beep the Meep! – reads this story featuring Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor and her companion Graham O’Brien.

It’s 1970, and recordbreaking explorer Silvia Sandstrom has completed an epic lone drive to the North Pole, but once there her vehicle is swallowed by a hole in the ice. Meanwhile, the TARDIS is drawn to an arid wasteland, also apparently at the North Pole. Why is a nearby experimental base haunted by deranged figures? And who is the genius behind the Romanov Project and the wave of energy that now threatens to rip the Earth apart at every point in history?

This title, by Niel Bushnell (whose previous works include audio adventures The Ashes of Eternity and The Ice Kings), is available as a download (RRP £14) and on CD (RRP £11). To be in with a chance of winning one of FIVE copies, answer this question:

Last year’s The Power of the Doctor ended on a tantalising cliffhanger as David Tennant was revealed to be the new Doctor. Happily, we didn’t have to wait until last month’s The Star Beast to find out more, as the Fourteenth Doctor’s travels kicked off in the pages of this very magazine. Not only that, before he had a chance to catch his breath, he was confronted by his old enemies – the Daleks!

Written by Alan Barnes and beautifully illustrated by Lee Sullivan with eye-popping colour by James Offredi, this story bridges the gap between recent episodes and ties directly into the new TV series continuity.

All 14 parts have been gathered together in this special collector’s edition. It’s available now in shops and online (RRP £12.99), but you could be in with a chance to win one of FIVE copies we’re giving away simply by sending us the answer to the following question:

TERMS AND CONDITIONS: The competitions open on Thursday 7 December to Wednesday 3 January. One entry per person. Jaye Griffiths, who appeared as UNIT operative Jac during the Capaldi era (and is also now a Big Finish audio companion), narrates this Twelfth Doctor adventure from prolific Who writer Steve Lyons.

The cuckoo of the title takes the form of a new rival for Clara. She has settled into a life of teaching at Coal Hill by day, and adventuring with the Doctor in her spare time. One day, however, she is shocked to discover that the Doctor has acquired a new sidekick, Arix, who’s just as at home in the TARDIS.

The two companions size each other up, with the Doctor caught in the middle. When they find themselves in an alien swamp, it’s time for a reckoning of grievances and grudges – and bravery!

This release is available as a download (RRP £14) and on CD (RRP £11), but we have FIVE copies of the CD version to give away. Just answer the question below.
