I am really developing a problem with "thus far". My yellowing copy of Struck and White does not mention it, perhaps because it's a recent affectation. I can reveal that the upcoming edition of Strunk and White and @mjd will say "Thus far, whom have you impressed with your erudition? At a reasonable guess, nobody so far. Have you yet considered 'yet'?"

Anyway, in #AU we only elect a small minority of our Prime Ministers. Black Rod opens every day in parliament by ceremonially laying out the knife in front of the members of the front bench. Prime Ministership is very much a mixed bag. you do get a splendid pension and a permanent spot on the speaking circuit and boards of the major financial institutions for a very small (well, brief) amount of work, but there's also the stitches to consider.

A world with elected representatives who were intelligent, articulate, well-meaning, but often disappointing, would be a huge step up for us as a species. Huge.

Years ago I read an article quoting someone who had moved to Vermont, not in order to be able to vote for #Bernie Sanders, but in order to live in a place where the people voted for someone like him. I would like to live on a planet where the citizens of the most powerful nation voted for someone like him.

@kat I see what you did there. BTW here's an anonymous Wikipedia improvement (from an IP address that is not mine, honest), reverted seconds after I took this screenshot, by an editor with no taste. I think it's also shocking that the article omits the fact that Smith is actually Peter Cook doing his E.L. Wisty character. "I'll tell you another interesting fact. Did you know that some people in the BME community have a funny tin…? No, wait. That's wrong. Interestingly, I also collect wrong facts.

Mind you, the gender balance in that hall… It's not so much tilted as vertical. Something's not right there. You don't get that in #Drupal conferences. Well, not since over ten years ago. #Debian #Debconf

Does every faux-progressive opinion columnist in the #UK do nothing but pine for the return of Tony Blair? They seem to be dismayed that politics has become so "divisive" that people are actually turning out to vote; it would be better for democracy if we had a resurgence of "moderates" (i.e. Thatcherite Labour) who would once again inspire people to stay home. STFU. You got your Spice Girls reunion. Be happy with that.

Watching @bkuhn choke up when talking about what the #Debian community means to him brought a tear to my eye as well. It's a powerful observation that #freesoftware advocates should make more often: most people get their software from companies; we get ours from friends who care about us enough to want to ensure we can function in 21st century society without compromising our liberty.
