Surely the least compliment one can pay a remorseless, pitiless and, so far, fairly successful enemy is studying why they do things, what they want and what they hope and expect to achieve from their actions. And surely, unless you know something they do not know, the silliest response to their actions is to do exactly what they have hoped for. When IS agents poked their stick into the French, and western antbed, last week, they hoped to inflame public opinion in countries which are the enemies of Islamic State. They wanted to cause a massive retaliation, particularly in Syria and Iraq, but also in France itself. They hoped to stir anti-Muslim feeling and to make followers of Islam feel besieged.
