Here's my problem with well-intentioned people working in neoliberal higher #edu: The system is a big f-off multi-dimensional scam. You know it's a scam, but you think you can surreptitiously slip some of the special stuff under the counter to benefit the students without anybody noticing. However, the students have internalised the scam, they want the scam, they want the otherwise worthless certificate granting them the right to scam others. They each know that they are collectively working towards the end of civilisation, but by God they each intend to be the ruthless Thatcherite spiv standing triumphant upon the mountain of bones as the death knell tolls.
